Body shapes or Shirtless men!

*ahem* Well, one of the plus sides of TS3 is the ability to sculpt the bodies as well as the faces. So without much more needing to be said (it's really all in the title of this post) I'm going to start with our main three guys: Henry, Brandon and Jimmy.

Right away, I can tell it's hard to tell the differences. One of the problem with TS3 men is that they all have muscle definition around the shoulder, the forearms are shaped the same, the backs have the same (for lack of a better word) dents. It's just the mesh it seems. These are things that don't change no matter how flabby a male sim is or how muscular.

What does change is the upper arm, the shape of the torso, width of the body.

Here's a comparison where you can see the arms. Jimmy actually has a smoother arm. He's less muscular than Brandon and Jimmy. In my head, Brandon is much more compact, somewhat short but blocky. Henri is tall, but it's clear Brandon gets his muscles from Henri. Meanwhile, of the three of them, Jimmy is actually a bit more lithe. (But only of the three of them.)

Here's a shot from the back. See what I mean? The body mesh will all have the same depth of the spine regardless of muscle mass when I'd expect that Brandon's spine would probably be a bit deeper than Jimmy's. Well, it almost looks like it is, but I think that's just because of the angle of the light.

From this picture, you can see the curve to their backs. Brandon and Henri both have waists that are more defined. Jimmy's more straight up and down. His waist is actually a bit thicker than Brandon's. And Henri, being the oldest actually has the thickest waist, but I couldn't easily get a comparison shot of that. You'll have to trust me on that.

Oh, well actually, this is a good comparison shot of the waists. What I mostly wanted to show here is that Aaron is a giant.

Aaron is taller than Henri and as muscular as Brandon. His waist is actually a bit smaller though, despite that he's older. I imagine that Aaron moves fast and he's strong.

Another comparison shot of the torsos. Jimmy's starting to look flabby next to those three.

So then my next thing was to show you Alex between Brandon and Aaron. Alex is one of the guys who's actually very lithe. He's young, but he's scrappy. Ignoring the fact that his skin tone is ripped, and only looking at the shape of his torso, there's not much to him. I imagine that Alex is very wiry. He's young, but he hasn't had a very easy life. He's got one of the thinnest waists because he's one of the youngest. He also isn't actually very muscular in CAS. See the line of his torso is pretty straight compared to Brandon's.

A side comparison makes it more clear I think. I'd also like to point out how pinchable Aaron's butt is right here. I am pretty sure that was intentional on my part when I was sculpting him. I gave him a little bit more butt because it makes his waist look more defined.

Of course my two favorite guys. Mitchell is actually taller than Angel and thicker. Angel is the older one, but he's naturally more agile because of his power (or ability I suppose would be more accurate). Angel has more muscle mass though. You can see it in his arms.

Poor Mitchell. I can hear him asking in my head, "Can I put my shirt back on now? It's cold."

With the guys, the differences are subtle. Even when it comes to heights, it's hard to make changes that are drastically different. I find that if you make them too tall, they look weird. The original slider hack I'd been using that was by Delphy extends the sim skeleton similar to the way we used to in TS2, but I find that's not a good way to do it. It ends up distorting the body and distorting the skin on the body.

Jonha had some sliders in testing here which break the sliders down, so instead of one slider, you have to use a minimum of three- one for the torso, one for the legs, and one for the arm length. It's a pretty clever system actually, since in real life people don't always have the same proportions. (Like Jay and I noticed a while ago we have almost the same torso length but his legs are way longer making him 6' to my 5'4".)

But as always, the fun ones to play with are really the girls.

I think the differences are obvious. Paula, coming from the Neutral area where her biggest concerns were studying and hanging out with friends, is an average size. She's got a little belly, she's wider, and her boobs are big because she has some weight to her.

Maria is the smallest. She's more of an athletic body. Her breasts are smaller, her waist is less defined, she has less of a butt. I see her always being like this even when she's older.

Kyrene is more voluptuous of course. She has hips and breasts. She's muscular, and she's not skinny. But it's unfair to compare her to these two since she is a full grown woman. You can compare her to Pat though.

With Pat, I flat out admit I spent some time on her butt. I have no good reason for it but that I'm rather proud of the way she came out. She's got a waist and hips that flare out a bit. I imagine she's young, but she's healthy and strong.

Looking for pictures of Pat, I've come across some Brandon and Pat ones I should probably share one of these days. They were the original test shots that let me know I had Pat down perfectly.

After I stopped staring....

LMAO!!!!

Proportions seem perfect to me. You always get sports. Women with very long and narrow waists or short legs and all the weight in the breasts. Men with long legs but the proportion from waist to chest is not as long. But what you've done is remarkable.

Ooooh.....I might have to install some body sliders next. Wow, I had no idea that Aaron was such a giant! There's definitely more contrast between the ladies than the men...

Interesting! I've done similar comparisons with some of my characters and I agree, it is definitely easier to sculpt and visually see the differences amongst the women than it is amongst the men. I've been using Jonha's height sliders and the arm length one really helps keep the visuals in proportion.

It's strange to finally see Angel and Mitchell together like that. I was re-reading their profiles yesterday and thought it strange that Mitchell is stated as taller than Angel, I always got the impression that it was the other way. Perhaps it is because Angel is so visible and Mitchell tries to blend in with the background?

PS - have you tried giving Alex a little more bulk? When I was experimenting with skins for my sims I found that it is bizarre seeing a ripped skin like Alex's once the slider starts moving past the halfway point on the weight scale - Santa with a six-pack *lol*

Oh my! *wipes drool* Thank you for this very lovely presentation, lol!

I love it! All the heights and thicknesses! Everyone looks amazing! Both guys and girls! I'm so jealous of the way this works, and I really want this kind of variation for my characters! Like, now, lol!

Random thought - could you not find another flabbier skintone to put on flabby dudes (not that you have any!), the same way you've got a ripped skintone on Alex? Does that work the same way for the women then? Like the hip bone definition on Maria and Kyrene, does Paula have that too, even though she's fleshier?

That makes a lot of sense to use different sliders for height, because yes, that's one of my biggest complaints about the way TS2 height works is that the arms become weirdly long or the body stretches out too thin.

You all are fast today, lol.

SB, LMAO! Thanks. Drives me nuts that the guys are all so similar in meshes though. At least for right now.

Rachel, I know, it's sort of hard to tell unless they're all together like this. The height differences are so subtle. Brandon's quite a few inches shorter than Aaron.

And there is much more variation among the ladies, but they don't really have the mesh limitations the men seem to have. Plus, most of my characters are all similar. Paula is one of the stand outs because she had a pretty good life before this.

Illandrya, lol, yes, I made a fat sim using my default skins and the skin Alex has. Ick, gross, lol! Like they're wearing one of those t-shirts with the painted on abs.

Yes, Mitchel does try very much to stay in the background and let Angel take the lead. Mitchell is a stray, and I think a part of him is amazed he's still alive and feels grateful to Angel for that.

Laura, haha. I'm very glad Jay is asleep right now or else he'd be rolling his eyes at me and all my shirtless characters. He already thinks I'm making sim porn. (Which isn't always true.)

Yes, you can find fleshier skintones for those who aren't muscular. I'm mostly just lazy. It's hard to find good skintones, you know? I end up having to mix and match body parts and make my own. Like Alex's skintone is actually a non-default Peggy skintone, but I HATED the face. The first time we see Alex at the edge of the world, he's got the old face on. I had to put on lipstick to make his lips a more natural color, and I don't think it worked, lol.

So I edited the skin tone and put the face from the defaults I'm using on the Peggy skintone.

I'll probably do the same for Paula and the fleshier sims. I really love the face from my default skins, though Tamo came out with a beautiful looking face replacement that I might snap up for the fleshier sims too. I have another sim I want to create sooner or later here.

And yeah, Paula does have that hip bone definition. I would imagine that she's not likely to show her belly, especially in this place with everyone being so... you know Kyrene and Maria like. This means that Paula is pretty much limited to like two pairs of pants in game because all the others are low rise. It's another case of the game imitating real life because I can't easily find jeans that aren't low rise myself!

OMFG I think I just fell in lust with Henri...

Will return to make a more sage comment after I wipe up the drool.

Does Henri EVER smile? Brandon and Jimmy are obviously finding something funny in those first shots, but Henri looks like he's carved from stone.

So they have butt sliders now? LOL, oh, they're thinking of everything, these TS3 modders!

This is just so cool! I love that you've considered all this stuff and I love how it's all turned out.

Also, I love your boys. Ahem.

Gayl, LOL! Don't forget the shots of Henri in this post. Ah Henri...

Illandrya, that's a good question, lol! I don't see him smiling very often in my head. He has smiled, just it's never just one of those "because it's funny" smiles. I see a specially aggravated look when he's standing between Jimmy and Brandon who're either cracking jokes or teasing each other. But secretly, he knows he loves it. (Very secretly.)

Carla, oh man the sliders they have! Yes, there's a but slider to go along with the waist and breast sliders.

lol, thank you.

Thank you for reminding me about that piece. There is something about Henri that is beyond the rest. His danger as well as his maturity. Even in that formal shot of him with Paula's mom he cut a fine figure of a man.

That is one thing with Sims 3 that I wish was in Sims 2, the ability to really sculpt a body the way that character should really look. Makes it tempting to consider.

I am curious and apologize if this was mentioned elsewhere but are Jimmy, Brandon, Paula etc actually born in the game or created? Can you sculpt a Sim after they have been born?

The Lunar Fox said...

Yes, Henri is definitely my case for why maturity is sexy. Plus it was so fun to throw him in a tux.

No apologies necessary. I have a lot of info all over the place. It's impossible to catch it all!

Technically, Jimmy, Brandon and Paula were born in game, but not in the sense I normally mean when I say that with TS2. These guys are like test tube sim babies, lol.

I first made Henri, then I made Vivian and Cheryl. Then I used the CAS baby maker to make Jimmy (his father was a random CAS sim), Brandon and Paula.

You can sculpt a sim after they've been "born." With a hack, you can edit them in CAS and alter them like you're making a new sim. Then you're done. I actually do this a lot to make older and younger versions of them.

Mary is one who went through multiple treatments through the passage of time as she "developed" though I don't think any of that was very obvious.

I talked a little bit about the creation of Henri, Paula and Brandon over here.

Must be something about that broad back and shoulders of his...

*slaps self*

This was a very intriguing experiment!
